We will start a discussion at 10am on Padlet - https://padlet.com/jmillican/vfbrb9d7bsr
You should be able to log on using your school Google account, but if you have any problems then email me.
The discussion will be an open format with the group asking questions about the reading and making observations. If you see someone has asked a question or made an observation before you submitted yours, and yours is not related, please wait until at least one person has responded to the current topic before switching.
Negative points will be assessed on Classcraft for "blurting" out with off-topic remarks (note that some points already have been subtracted for not completing yesterday's assignment).
The discussion will be in an open format, but some ideas to think about:
1. What do you think was the actual intent of the Dawes Act?
2. What were some far-reaching consequences of the Dawes Act?
3. Commissioner of Indian Affairs said the Dawes Act would transform “Idleness, improvidence, ignorance, and superstition… into industry, thrift, intelligence, and Christianity.” Senator Dawes himself is rumored to have made the claim that to be civilized was to "wear civilized clothes...cultivate the ground, live in houses, ride in Studebaker wagons, send children to school, drink whiskey [and] own property." Is this an accurate assessment of Native Americans before and after the Act? Is this what it means to be "civilized"? Is this ultimately a goal that the country should have?
4. How does the debate about Kennewick Man, echo the Dawes Act and the attitudes associated?
