LOVE BOOK
 
Section                     Description
 
1. Cover Page                 This should have the title of your book and your name.
                                      You may decorate it if you wish, but it is not necessary.
                                      Neatness will be assessed on this and all other sections.
 
2. Dedication                 Give some thought to this and then dedicate your book.
                                      You might even want to wait until you have finished much
                                      of your work before you do this.
 
3. Table of Contents       Write the title or topic on the left side and the page number
                                      on the right.
 
4. Types of Love              Each section here has to have at least three pictures and two
                                      kinds of writing. Each section must have some original
                                      thoughts and/or reflections and at least three quotations per
                                      section. Love of God, Family, Friends, and Self are required.
                                      This means you’ll have at least twenty-one pictures, seven
                                      writings, and twenty-one quotations.
 
5. Letters                       You must have one from your parent(s) and you must have
                                      one to your parent(s). You may want to have two and write
                                      two. You may want to write additional letters to your family
                                      or friends, but it is optional.
 
6. Conclusion                 This should be written when your book is finished. It should
                                      explain what you learned while doing this project.
 
NOTE: The Love Book will be graded based on neatness and thoughtfulness.

1. What does Ponyboy mean when he says the socs were "reeling pickled"? How does this affect Ponyboy and Johnny’s feelings towards them? Do you think it made a difference in what Johnny decided to do?
 
2. The boys immediately turn to Dally for help. Why is he the logical choice? Explain why or if you would have gone to someone else then explain why.
 
3. What would your advice be to Johnny and Ponyboy if they'd come to you for help instead of Dally? Explain in detail.
 
4. Johnny says he has a premonition when he first goes in the church. What does this mean? Have you ever had a premonition? Did something actually happen?
 
5. Why does Johnny say the judge makes the Greasers cut their hair when they get caught? Do you think his assessment is correct? What’s one thing that ties into your identity that you wouldn’t want taken from you? Explain.
 
6. Why does Johnny think Dally is a hero? Do you agree with Johnny? Why does Ponyboy realize he doesn't like Dally? Compare and contrast Johnny’s and Ponyboy’s views of Dally.
 
7. What is the meaning of the poem on pg. 77 to you?
 
8. Who is the spy for the greasers? Does this surprise you? Why or why not?
 
9. Why doesn't Dally want Johnny to turn himself in? What "other side" of Dallas is revealed in this chapter? Does this surprise you? Why or why not?
 
10. What's your own definition of a hero? Do the three boys prove themselves to be heroes, according to your definition? Explain.
 
11. Do you think Ponyboy would have ever understood how much Darry cared, if the incidents at the park and then the church hadn’t happened?

Supreme Court Decision Essay - Due 2/13

Throughout the history of the Supreme Court there have been instances where, from our thinking today, the SCOTUS has made decisions that directly oppose (Dred Scott v. Sandford), or circumvent the intent of (Plessy v. Ferguson), the Constitution. Your assignment is to pick any Supreme Court case that directly relates to schools, or education, and research the decision. I want you to decide if you think the decision was constitutional or not. I want you to clearly state this in your thesis and then support your thesis with evidence.

No more than 2 students can research the same SCOTUS decision.

Essay Scoring:
5 pts for Outline
15 pts for a correctly formatted works cited list (per MLA), containing at least 3 sources
15 pts for a clear, concise, and controversial thesis
25 pts for correct spelling and grammar
40 pts for supporting all claims with evidence that is connected to the claim through concise reasoning and thoughtful analysis--must include one direct quote in MLA format
 
 
Controversial - giving rise, or likely giving rise to discussion, disagreement or argument
